Moon shot

Earlier this evening I was outside and noticed for the first time in what seemed like ages, there was very little cloud cover and the moon was shining brightly.

So I decided to break out the camera and take the opportunity to capture a few pictures. I have to admit, I didn’t really know what pictures I would get as this is the first time I have ever taken photographs of the moon.

You can see the results of this above and to be honest, I’m quite pleased with the results. The pictures I managed to grab have created an interest in astro-photography in me.

Of course, like any beginner, I’m not really geared up to do this properly. The pictures above were taken with a handheld camera. I do have a tripod but didn’t take the time to get it setup in order to ensure a rocky steady and hence guaranteed blur free, picture. Maybe I will do that next time.

I’m told the proper way to go about photographing the moon and astro-photography of other things, is to have a proper telescope with a camera adaptor. I have no idea how to manage that setup with the equipment I already have, so things could get expensive very quickly if I go down that route.

So that said, I’d appreciate any recommendations people have for a decent quality telescope with a camera mount. In fact, give me a short introduction to telescopes. Are reflectors the way to go? Or should I be looking at refractors? Are there optical gadgets you can attach to a computer so the computer or laptop does all the image processing passed by the optical instrument? If they do exist, are they insane amounts of money?

So many questions, so little time.
