The title reflects a line from The Eagles song, Desperado. “You’re losing all the highs and lows, ain’t it funny how the feeling goes away?”
I think it is true in most peoples’ lives that they can hit a patch of time where they’re going through the motions of daily life. No highs, no lows, just the daily routine. The days merge into weeks, weeks into months, months into years. Then before you know it, five years have flown by. Have you ever found yourself going through a patch like that?
Working non-standard hours can cause that type of feeling. While everyone around you is looking forward to the weekend or a bank holiday, you can find yourself having to work and grabbing some downtime another day.
The fun times disappear and the dark times can come if you’re not very careful. It is then those highs and lows become very important. The variance of adversity makes you appreciate the good times. After all, they do say variety is the spice of life.
More-so now than any other time of my life, I now find myself having to ensure that variety is maintained from one day to the next. Perhaps I’ll write more another day on how I’m doing that.
In the meantime I’m going to reflect on the rest of the lyrics from that song.
